So I had this brainstorm I would find me an old Range rover body and restore it piece by piece..LOL ! If anyone knows anything bout rovers is the bodies where aluminum so they are around and built to last! But finding even a body for a reasonable price is pain staking. So here's what I'm looking for year whys: A 60s to 70s version two door preferred with this unique Buick engine! Although any engine can be put in them as far as I know. From a four to an inline six to a huge cube V8. A chevy 4.3 litre would work great! There are tons of those around.

Wikipedia :

By the 1960s, Rover was becoming aware of the development of the sports utility vehicle (SUV) in North America. SUVs such as the International Harvester Scout and the Ford Bronco offered a different blend of off- and on-road ability from existing utility 4x4s such as the Land Rover and the Jeep, proving capable of good on-road comfort and speed while retaining more than adequate off-road ability for most private users. The Jeep Wagoneer proved the concept further. The final element of what would become the Range Rover concept was provided by the president of Rover's USA operations who, frustrated by the lack of suitable vehicles from Britain to compete with the new crop of SUVs, sent Rover a Land Rover Series II 88 fitted with a Buick V8 engine which offered far greater on-road performance and refinement than any Land Rover then in production.

Rover acknowledged the emergence of this new market for recreational off-roaders, and, in 1967, with Charles Spencer King in charge, began the "100-inch Station Wagon" programme to develop a radical car to compete. King quickly defined the basic layout of the new vehicle, realising that only long-travel coil springs could provide the required blend of luxury car comfort and Land Rover's established off-road ability. (King is said to have been convinced by coil springs while driving a Rover P6 across rough scrubland on part of the Solihull factory site that was being redeveloped, but Rover also bought a Ford Bronco which featured such a suspension system in the early stages of the 100-inch SW programme). Spencer King was also convinced that a permanent four-wheel drive transmission was needed both to provide adequate handling and to reliably absorb the power that would be required by the vehicle if it was to be competitive. This required a totally new transmission unit to be developed, but Rover spread development costs between the 100-inch SW project and one working on what would become the Land Rover 101 Forward Control. The adoption by Rover of the Buick alloy V8 engine had provided the perfect powerplant for the new 4x4, being powerful, light and sturdy. Various modifications were made to the design to suit use in the Range Rover, such as fitting different carburetors that maintained fuel supply at extreme angles and making a provision for the engine to use a starting handle in emergencies.

The final design, launched in 1970 with bodywork styled largely by the engineering team rather than David Bache's styling division, was marketed as "A Car For All Reasons". In its original guise, the Range Rover was more capable off-road than the Land Rover but was much more comfortable, offering a top speed in excess of 100 mph (160 km/h), a towing capacity of 3.5 tons, spacious accommodation for five people and groundbreaking features such as a four-speed, dual-range, permanent four-wheel-drive gearbox and hydraulic disc brakes on all wheels."

After you're done, find a nice mechanic who will live in the trunk.

^ Are they unreliable? Maybe I would be better off restoring an old Toyota land cruiser? I've also been looking for an old Isuzu trooper they aren't easy to come by either. Yeah after I found a range rover defender shell think it was a 1967? Wanted 24k for it! No glass nothing just the frame and body

No shit? What the hell would make them do that ? They also usually rusted apart long before the engines went thanks guys I'll figure something out. Figured rovers being aluminum would be a plus but being Limey they also are a b*tch to get parts for hmm. Might as well build a jeep or ford bronco! But I want some room behind the front seats to.

I found an 84 60 series toy land cruiser blown tranny 2,500 4+4 in excellent shape high miles but its an automatic which I don't want. But with as many variations as Toyota made you can virtually build your own to suite your needs. Every thing from a straight six to a turbo diesel. Parts aren't cheap but you can also get stuff from Japan they never sold here. Its just about endless as to the possibilities of engines and tranny combos. Yep Im sold Toyota land cruiser it is!

A Brief History of the 60 Series Land Cruiser

wiki.

The 60 series Toyota Land Cruiser was produce by Toyota Motor Company from 1980 to 1990. The 60 series Land Cruiser was a step up in comfort from the FJ55 model that preceded it. This was due in part to growing demand for such a vehicle in Japan and the need to compete with Land Rover in the United States. the model 60 series debuted with both a gasoline and diesel engine option, the 2F (gas) and 3B (diesel) engines. the 2F engine is the same engine that had been used for many years in the FJ40. Diesel variants of the 60 series were not sold in the United States.

The HJ60 was released in 1982. It was equipped with an inline 6 cylinder diesel engine (2H) and many luxury features including an electric moon roof and remote control mirrors. The FJ and BJ 60 series eventually became the FJ61 and BJ61. A GX (luxury) version was eventually added for the FJ and BJ 61.

The FJ62 was produced starting in 1984. However, the 62 model was not sold in the U.S. until 1988. It came with an automatic 4-speed transmission and electronic fuel injected 4.0L inline 6-cylinder engine (3FE).

In 1985 the 12H-T engine was added to the 60 series in the HJ61. The 12H-T is a diesel engine with a direct injection turbo setup.

There were over 2500 variations of the 60 series Land Cruiser sold around the world. Option packages were available in some markets called the G, GX, VX, GXL, and Sahara

You'd be hard pressed to find an RRC of that vintage. The oldest I see are of the early to mid 90s. Going back that far you'd have an easier time finding an old LR series. Personally, I have a 95 Discovery and love it. Almost everything you hear that is negative about old Rovers is true. But...Once sorted out properly, they are extremely reliable and rugged. But plan to spend quite a bit to get there. I've spent over 4k just on wear items and maintenance. Then you still need a mod budget. Or not, as Rovers are amazingly capable out of the box. But factor in suspension, bumpers, wheels and tires, lights, winch, racks, etc and you're quickly at over 10k not including the price of the vehicle. Most older Rovers can be had for cheap though as many owners give up on them because they don't know the costs associated with ownership. Don't let that deter you though. They really are great vehicles if you know what you're doing. Super easy to work on, just slightly more complex than most other SUVs. That's what makes them cool. They're really great as trail rigs and expedition vehicles or dual purpose. I suggest getting on some forums like landroverforums.com and seeing what it really takes to own one. You might find its not for you. And if you find that you want one, there's always guys that know where to find good ones. Btw mine is always for sale for the right price.

It all depends on what you really want. Something to cruise in and haul gear? Any old American SUV will do. Something you can build for horsepower? A Bronco or diesel Expedition perhaps. Or maybe a Jeep with an SBC. But for dual purpose or expedition type rigs you can't lose with a Rover.

Old rovers are pretty bulletproof other than the electrics...but as you know, both those & the Toyotas are pricey for a good one. IH & the small broncos aren't much better on price, or availability. None of them get much better than 15MPG, either.

If you are looking for a good, closed-roof, offroad vehicle that still gets decent highway mileage the 90s cherokees (non-Grande) with the 4.0 are affordable. They come w/ a stick shift too & parts are dirt cheap. And they don't look like a soccer mom drives them.

Check NC 4X4 site next time you're in state.

It's gonna be an explorer I've looked at three now and I don't need 4x4 but thanks guys. Now what I'm gonna have to research is fords 5 speed automatic I find it doubtfull those things hold up although I've come a cross em in high mileage explorers. And standard shifts with four bangers what I would want for ease of maintenance and cheap to repair and parts are non existant unless I find a really old one strange. But restore a rover or land cruiser? Not worth the aggregation ! I have a 70 mustang and a 71 Pontiac tempest those would be worth my time and money!

The Ford automatic in the Explorers from 2002 up have a nasty habit of exploding the front servo through the transmission case around 150K on the clock.

I have replaced at least 3 of them for that issue. Not to mention the rear differential assembly, front and rear wheel bearings, and drive shafts.

We don't call them explorers. We call them exploders.

Cherokees with the 4.0 are superior, but for the crank sensor on the bell housing. Exploders are best with the 4.0 (X) engine. The (E) engine has a poorly designed timing chain in the back that gets noisy.
